Germany Address Format Guide
German addresses follow Deutsche Post formatting standards. The address order places the postal code before the city name, which differs from US and UK formats.
German Address Structure
| Field | Example | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Street | Hauptstrasse 123 | Street name + number (number after name) |
| PLZ | 10115 | 5-digit postal code (Postleitzahl) |
| City | Berlin | City name (after postal code) |
| State | Berlin | Federal state (Bundesland) |
German PLZ (Postleitzahl) Format
- Format: NNNNN (5 digits, no separator)
- Introduced in 1993 after German reunification
- First digit: postal zone (0=Saxony/Thuringia, 1=Berlin/Brandenburg, 8=Southern Bavaria)
- PLZ ranges: 01000-01999 (Dresden), 10115-14199 (Berlin), 20000-27999 (Hamburg)
Key Differences from US/UK Addresses
- House number comes after street name (not before)
- Postal code comes before city name (same line)
- No county or state abbreviation in the address line
- Street types: Strasse, Weg, Allee, Platz, Gasse
